Abstract

This chapter is concerned with designing intersectional research for exploring the complexity of ‘identity’ in health care research and, particularly, in relation to the patient lived experience. We provide an overview of the origins and key principles of intersectionality and pay particular attention to designing for prototypical intersectional research in health care topics. We draw, as an illustrative example, on a project on a chronic condition, namely the lived experience of the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and the social stigma associated with it. We reflect on the strengths of the research design which includes multiple datasets, clinical manifestations of PCOS, patients’ self-reporting questionnaires, audio recordings of patients’ interactions with the clinical team, focus groups with patient support groups, and argue in favour of multi-method designs which allow for a holistic analysis of factors that interplay and affect the perception of complex phenomena such as living with a chronic condition. We introduce the concept of ‘health penalty’ to refer to ideological processes of stigmatisation in the healthcare context and propose intersectional designs for the holistic study of stigma deriving from a medical condition. We conclude the chapter by offering a model for the study of intersecting identities in chronic conditions drawing on medical and health linguistic research.
