Abstract
This thesis explores the origin and development of anticolonial ideas within Basque radicalism from the late nineteenth century until 1936 through a close examination of Basque periodicals. It argues that from the emergence of the movement in the late nineteenth century, anticolonialism became a recurrent element of the Basque radical nationalist agenda. Basque radicals framed the situation of Euskadi as a colonial one and advocated the end of colonialism. I argue that despite the constant presence of Basque anticolonial ideas within Basque nationalism, this did not mean that Basque radicals were driven by a genuine hatred for colonialism. Instead, Basque anticolonialism responded to the needs of the movement and was motivated by the goals of internationalising the movement and legitimising Basque independence claims.
Assessing the evolution of Basque anticolonialism invites the exploration of other crucial aspects of the Basque nationalist ideology, including violence and race. This is because the Basque nationalist belief in being part of an anticolonial insurrection prompted Basque radicals to consider different strategies used in colonial settings, including violence, and forced analogies between the Basques and other colonised nations. Colonialism, violence and race are the main themes of this thesis.
