Abstract

The research project, carried out jointly by the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan and the University of Warwick (Coventry, UK), focused on the cataloguing and analysis of the monetary finds from several archaeological excavations carried out in Milan over the last forty years. The database to which I have been able to refer includes 1,485 coins, most of them completely unpublished, which have been included in the catalogue of the thesis, to which can be added the 1,579 specimens from the city known from previous studies. My contribution has therefore made it possible to double the number of coin finds identified and analysed from Mediolanum, which now amounts to 3,064 specimens. The focus of the research has been on the period between the 5th century BC and the 8th century AD, for which I have reconstructed the history of the city and its coin production and circulation based on the data acquired so far. I have also reconstructed the stratigraphic sequence for each of the Milanese archaeological excavations I have studied, with the purpose to analyse the coin finds also from a contextual point of view.
