Abstract
Chapter one is a systematic literature review of qualitative empirical literature on the relationship between religiousness and psychosis in adults. Searches identified eight studies that met the review criteria and three main themes emerged from the meta-ethnography synthesis: Meaning making, Coping, and Service delivery. Strengths and limitations, clinical practice, and policy implications, as well as future research recommendations of the review, are discussed.
Chapter two reports on an empirical study of how Muslim men conceptualise their mental health difficulties. Ten Muslim men were interviewed, and grounded theory analysis revealed three core categories: Islam, Meaning Making and Support. Islam had eight sub-categories which included Connection with Allah, Maintaining Relationships, Belief, Practice, Values, Decision making, Avoiding Sin and Sunnah. Meaning Making had three sub-themes; Life is a test, Decree from Allah, and Normal human experience. Finally, Support has four sub themes; Masculinity, Embarrassment, Therapeutic relationship and Incorporating beliefs. The researcher then expressed these categories and memos in the construction of a substantive theoretical model. Strengths and limitations, clinical practice, and policy implications, as well as future research recommendations of this study, are outlined.
Chapter three is a reflective summary on the various ways that undertaking this doctoral thesis research has impacted on the researcher. The chapter uses concepts and ideas from the theoretical model developed from the empirical paper while also drawing upon aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
