Abstract
Poly(2-oxazoline)s represents a powerful class of polymers for the synthesis of functional linear and grafted copolymers. Controlled polymerization techniques and the easy tunability of the properties of poly(2-oxazoline)s can be used for the synthesis of functional polymers with exceptional properties in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems. In this Thesis, novel linear and grafted oxazoline-based architectures are synthesized, and their properties are evaluated in aqueous and non-aqueous media. A review of the relevant literature is first presented. Second, the synthesis of 2-oxazoline/methacrylate-based linear and grafted copolymers obtained via the grafting-onto method is reported and their thermoresponsive properties are evaluated in a commercially available oil. Third, the self-assembly behaviour in both dodecane and water of a new library of 2-oxazoline/methacrylate-based graft-copolymers obtained via the grafting-through approach is investigated. Fourth, a library of 2-oxazoline linear copolymers is evaluated as synthetic nanoengineered antimicrobial polymer peptides, and their antimicrobial properties and mechanism of action are investigated in vitro and in vivo against the clinically relevant pathogen S. aureus. Finally, conclusions and outlook on the direction of the research in this area are presented.
