Abstract
In what follows I try for the most part to set my own conception of photography to one side, in order to raise a question about the internal relation between Walton’s, as set out in ‘Transparent Pictures: On the Nature of Photographic Realism’ ( 1984 ), and his critique of aesthetic empiricism in ‘Categories of Art’ ( 1970 ). Taking the two texts together, a question naturally arises as to how Walton’s account of the significance of artistic ‘categories’ in constraining informed aesthetic judgement impacts – or should impact – his view of photography, at least in so far as photography is considered as art. In raising this question, my aim is to extend a line of questioning begun elsewhere about the relation between Walton’s conception of photography and some of his broader philosophical commitments.
