Abstract
This thesis presents a critical edition of a Latin epic composed by Antoine de Garissoles (1587-1651), a Reformed minister and professor of theology at the Protestant academy of Montauban in France. The Adolphid (Montauban, 1649) primarily details the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf's victories in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), but concurrent themes include Huguenot suffering and connections formed between France's Reformed population and the Swedish Vasa dynasty. In the context of the Adolphid, the thesis examines the role of literary production as a Huguenot survival strategy in the decades after the military defeat of this minority by Louis XIII in 1628. It also demonstrates the significance of Latin epic as a confessional adhesive for a pan-European Protestant community.
An original translation, an introduction, and a commentary accompany the Latin text of the poem. Following methodological notes relating to this study, the introduction supplies biographical information on the Adolphid's author and places the epic within its political, religious and literary contexts. It relies on archival research, early modern printed and manuscript sources, as well as secondary scholarship. The commentary aims to facilitate an interpretation of the text by elucidating epic-poetic features and historical events. The Latin text is an edited version of Garissoles' original imprint, integrating the author's own corrigenda and correcting obvious typographical mistakes. Its footnotes contain a critical apparatus, which enables the reader to track variant versions of the text.
These four parts are set forth in three separate volumes. Volume 1 contains the introduction and the commentary, while volume 2 includes the Latin text. The English translation is provided in volume 3.
