Abstract
This chapter examines some basic ideas from game theory and the theory of collective action, to account for the failure of politicians everywhere to adopt sufficient measures to avert dangerous climate change. It argues that a key feature of this failure is a lack of information and understanding, and that apparently altruistic action is the only way to exit the impasse.
