Abstract
Microtubules are the major component of the mitotic spindle, the main tracks for intracellular long-distance transport and they fulfill a variety of other vital cellular functions. Microtubules are polymers assembled from tubulin subunits, whose dynamical switching between assembly and disassembly is regulated by GTP hydrolysis and a network of associated proteins that either decorate the length of the microtubule, walk along them or specifically recognize the ends. Here I summarize the current knowledge on structure, mechanics, dynamics and cellular functions of microtubules and their associated proteins.
