Abstract
Although mandatory vaccination policies might be needed to safeguard public health in unprecedented times, this goal should primarily be pursued through population empowerment. Healthcare policies could substantially benefit, not so much from coercion, as from shaping a bundle of incentives that intrinsically motivate social actors to behave accordingly. During the Covid 19 pandemic, the Greek policy intervention of introducing monthly monetary fee for the unvaccinated older adults raises certain ethical concerns, because it appears as lacking deeper sensitivity toward a particular diversity group. Healthcare organizations should adopt inclusive policies which are unique in any effort to address social demarcations and reduce emerging societal tensions. An inclusive leadership style is invested with a potential to mitigate social divide by underscoring the importance of intrinsic motivation of individuals when designing healthcare policy initiatives, especially with respect to choices regarding the competing demands of securing public health while respecting and honoring diversity categories.
