Abstract
This two-volume PhD thesis delves into diversity, equality, and disparities observed among Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups, with a specific focus on the subfield of race equality/relations, multi/interculturalism, and identities. It examines these disparities and BAME groups’ responses to evolving public policies to tackle these, exploring the challenges they face whilst tracking their progress. Drawing on the submitted outputs, the thesis identifies and explores emerging issues, themes, and theories relevant to addressing race inequality in the sub-field and in the realm of change management. It draws on concepts such as reflection in and on action, for seeking change within organisations, and on others such as resource mobilisation theory when attempting it as an outsider.
Volume I provides a succinct overview of my research, scholarship, and other analytical outputs, outlining their impact and contribution to different knowledge domains. It showcases the gradual expansion of my theoretical perspectives, multidisciplinary analytical approach, and research skills. It also examines the changes and debates within the theoretical landscape, relating these to the political and organisational backdrops and my career outputs.
Volume II further elaborates on and contextualises the above to situate my contributions. Its narrative is organised thematically or by clustering related outputs to construct five sections which critically explore prevailing theories, methodologies, policies, and strategies, drawing potential lessons and scoping their usefulness.
The thesis emphasises the significance of academic and action research in approaching change management. With respect to policy, it advocates for historiographical analyses, trend charting approaches, impact audits, and consideration of lived experience to enhance the understanding of disparities and promote judicious policy development and its impact assessment. Furthermore, it calls for further theoretical development of these approaches. The thesis illustrates how research-associated impact strategies evolve along diverse trajectories influenced by sector-specific environments, roles, and political backdrops. The aim has been to glean strategic insights from both my practical and research-oriented career journey, and to document significant albeit small contributions to the knowledge base of the subfield.
