Abstract
This study examines why and how business models 3.0 (BM 3.0) and Web3 impact organizations by exploring academic knowledge and empirical intervention findings.
BM 3.0 is the next evolution in technology-enabled business models made possible by Web3. BM 3.0 and Web3 create new opportunities for organizations to set ambitious goals, gain competitive advantage, and create enterprise value. They represent the inflection point of the next wave of transformation in organizations.
This thesis presents a research-based perspective and is supported by a literature review in the intersection of four critical literature streams: (1) BM 3.0; (2) Web3 technologies; (3) the resource-based view of organizations; and (4) the transformation, value, and impact of business models. A conceptual framework grounded in literature and theoretical foundations is derived.
The conceptual framework is further enhanced using the insights from two practical interventions. The interventions are in the plan, design, and launch of BM 3.0 and Web3 in the supply chain domain of a sector-leading fast-moving consumer goods (SL-FMCG) organization and the customer experience domain of a next-generation cognitive city (NG-City). The findings and insights from the data from the two interventions are analyzed and synthesized to derive the practical process models and frameworks.
The study contributes to the knowledge and practice of the research topic by providing (1) an enhanced conceptual framework and (2) a practical process model. The study also provides leaders and experts with guidelines for applying the process model and frameworks outlined in this study. Finally discusses the guidelines and implications for two additional crucial practitioners – the CEO and the venture capitalist.
Practitioners can apply the learnings, insights, process models, and frameworks outlined in this research to strategize, execute, and measure the transformation of a business with BM 3.0 and Web3. As outlined in this study, such a transformation of resources and capabilities through leveraging BM 3.0 will significantly contribute to an organization’s competitive advantage, growth, profitability, agility and value over the next decade.
