Abstract
This thesis explores the experiences of adults with neurological difficulties as they navigate life with their condition.
Chapter one is a systematic literature review of the transitional nature of self-identity in adults with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). A systematic search of the literature identified 15 articles that met the eligibility criteria for Meta Ethnography. Three themes emerged from the analysis relating to a changed identity, spoiled identity and emerging identity. Clinical implications include the need for early psychological intervention for those with MS; support could be beneficial for individuals as their condition progresses. Study limitations and research recommendations are also discussed.
Chapter two details an empirical qualitative study capturing the experiences of uncertainty in individuals who have a diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). 15 individuals with FND participated in semi-structured interviews. Six themes emerged from thematic analysis, highlighting how individuals experienced living with the uncertainty associated with having Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Clinical implications relate to the need for collaborative, holistic care that offers Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and actively aims to support individuals in avoiding hopelessness. Study limitations and research recommendations are considered.
Chapter three is a first-person reflective narrative piece summarising the author’s experiences of conducting the research. The author offers reflections relating to both personal and professional development in the journey towards becoming a Clinical Psychologist. Inspirations for the project are discussed, as well as the author’s role as a researcher. Finally, considerations about the future are discussed with regards to ‘looking ahead’ to future research projects and roles.
