Abstract
Chapter one is a systematic literature review of qualitative studies investigating women’s experiences of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). Literature searches identified ten studies for inclusion. Using thematic synthesis, three main themes were identified: “What is happening to me?”, “Who am I now?”, and “Who can help me?”. The findings demonstrate the complexity of the experiences of women diagnosed with POI, which can affect their identity. Women can encounter difficulty accessing support pre-and post-diagnosis of POI, which can hinder coping with and adjustment to the diagnosis. Clinical and practice implications, as well as future research recommendations, are discussed.
Chapter two is an empirical study exploring parents’ experiences of childbirth in England during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven mothers and five partners who had their baby between March 2020 and April 2021 were interviewed about their experiences. Interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, yielding two group experiential themes: On the precipice of an uncertain birth, and The aftermath. Both mothers and partners described how the restrictions and the separation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, and distress leading up to, during, and after the birth.
Chapter three is a reflective paper describing the author’s experience of the research process, with a focus on the empirical study. This chapter uses concepts from Compassion Focused Therapy and Commitment Therapy (CFT), and the three systems of emotion regulation from Gilbert (2009). Factors affecting the author’s own systems of emotion regulation are discussed. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the research process and a focus on the future.
