Abstract
This chapter reviews the methodological implications of studying continuity and change considered as a co-constructed duality. It considers three research foci that contribute to illuminating this duality. Studies that adopt a “change” focus tend to involve longitudinal data and examine one side of the duality: how change occurs. Yet this indirectly tends to reveal the other side - the forces of resistance and inertia, implying continuity. Alternatively, studies that adopt a “reproduction” focus examine how activities and practices are maintained over time: These studies tend to take a more ethnographic perspective, focusing on phenomena in the moment. However, problematizing reproduction and continuity draws attention to the potential for change. Finally, a focus on “narrative” reveals how both continuity and change are interwoven within sensemaking processes captured in interviews or texts. Future research might address how these three approaches might be combined, and consider other ways to investigate the continuity-change duality.
