Abstract
Densification and alignment are observed to take place in YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) pellets annealed on platinum foil. The critical current density (J(c) at 50 K and 1 T) measured from the M(H) curve for the pellet is similar or equal to 6 x 10(3) A cm(-2). A compound with the stoichiometry of Ba4Pt2CuOy formed at the interface between the foil and YBCO, is identified and is believed to be responsible for the densification and alignment in the pellet. Elongated aligned grains of YBCO (similar to 250 mu m long) can be seen in the vicinity of this compound.
