Abstract
The 20 K phase transition temperature range is investigated in a high quality and purity single crystal of holmium. The sample was characterized through magnetization measurements and investigated by neutron diffraction, The comparison of the neutron diffraction and magnetization results gives clues about the onset of the conical phase, and its relationship to the 1/6 and 2/11 commensurate phases. The severe extinction present in the diffraction results was treated mainly by a primary extinction variant of the RED model. The obtained extinction parameters show, in contrast with results on other magnetic materials, that the perfection of the magnetic lattice can be higher than that of the nuclear lattice. They give, in addition, indications about the way the transition occurs, with no important reduction of the magnetic coherence length.
