Abstract
Emotional expression is hypothesized to be associated with growth following adversity. Two studies are described that test predictions made for emotional expression, first that it mediates the relation between event-related distress and growth, and second that the relation between emotional expression and growth is moderated by emotional intelligence. In Study 1, college students (n = 148) completed measures of traumatic experiences, emotional expression, and growth. Analyses showed that the relationship between event-related distress and growth was mediated by emotional expression. Study 2 examined the associations between emotional expression, emotional intelligence, and growth in a sample of college students (n = 190). Emotional intelligence was associated with growth. Moderator analyses revealed a three-way interaction between gender, emotional intelligence, and emotional expression, such that emotional intelligence moderated the association between emotional expression and posttraumatic growth in men but not in women.
