Abstract
Despite the pivotal place that Chilean filmmaker Raúl Ruiz occupies in the history of cinema, his vast and fascinating oeuvre has yet to be explored. This article reviews El cine de Raúl Ruiz: fantasmas, simulacros y artificios, a recently edited volume that puts into dialogue articles written by Chilean and foreign scholars and film critics that discuss from various perspectives the work of this elusive filmmaker. This book is interpreted as a re-appropriative gesture of this major figure, embodying a series of efforts undertaken by Chilean scholars to bring Ruiz to the centre of critical and public attention. Equally important, this edited collection is part of a similar but wider move that aims to bring this country's burgeoning filmic production to the forefront of general and critical interest and, consequently, the incipient scholarship dealing with this nation's cinema. This review locates this edited collection in the context of a transformation currently taking place in Chilean academia, which is now experiencing the configuration of an emerging film studies field.
