Abstract
There is considerable interest in spaces of length functions defined on a free group F on k 2 generators (or on its set of conjugacy classes). For example, the Culler-Vogtmann Outer space [13] has such a interpretation. The first aim of this note is to suggest a general notion of length function, which includes those which arise from isometric actions on negatively curved spaces and which are sufficiently
regular to lead to nice asymptotic properties.
