Abstract
The article reports the work of a curriculum‐development project on religious education in the United Kingdom. Grounded in ethnographic studies of religious communities in Britain, the project reassesses how religions are represented in religious‐education literature and develops an interpretive approach to the subject, which draws on theory from cultural anthropology. As well as devising an approach which attempts to “bridge” the experience of the learner and that of children portrayed in the curriculum materials, the project introduces the idea of “edification,” of helping pupils deepen their self‐understanding through engaging with the religious and cultural lives of others.
