Abstract
The essay traces changes in the understanding of the nature of religious education in the UK as a reaction to, among other things, the increasing presence of diverse ethnic cultural groups in society. Drawing from research materials and findings from various cultural anthropologists and religious educators, the essay shows that those who either support or argue against religious education and multicultural education do so on the bases of their unexamined assumptions about religion and culture. The essay concludes by painting a picture of what a multicultural society could be like.
