Abstract
A study of the Infant Rating Scale (IRS) was made to examine its usefulness as an instrument for the early identification of learning difficulties. 1,341 children, divided into three samples by terms of entry, were rated by their teachers after one term in school. The structure of the IRS, its reliability and predictive validity are examined. It is concluded that the IRS is a useful aid to the teacher of young children in the early identification of learning problems.
