Abstract
This article examines the relationship between the British poet Ted Hughes and the nature writer Henry Williamson. Hughes read Tarka the Otter at a young age and later read many of Williamson's other publications; a previously unpublished letter from Williamson to Hughes, which is reproduced here, suggests new insights into their reading of each other's work. I argue that close lexical parallels between Hughes's poetry and Williamson's prose writing, in both published and in draft form, point to the importance of Williamson's writing to Hughes. However, Hughes objected to Williamson's fascism, and the conservationist tenor of some of his later poems can be seen as embracing Williamson's concern about the preservation of the countryside while avoiding the influence of his far-right politics.
