Abstract
This special issue addresses a critical issue in the study of strategic information systems – namely how to better develop
our human resources (HR); a function which has been traditionally been largely administrative in nature, but with innovative use of information systems has the potential to be far more strategic-taking on new roles, identities and function. The editors of this special issue have assembled a unique and interesting collection of articles considering this topic; a particular strength of the papers, in our view, is the international diversity of the empirical insights offered. In this commentary we first briefly note several common themes across the four papers, themes we believe highlight the complexity of enabling new strategic HR functions coupled with the on-going challenges of adopting new systems. Next we highlight three conceptual themes that appear to a greater or lesser extent within the four papers and which we believe hold particular practical significance in studying E-HRM: shifting identities, innovation practice, and service thinking. We end by briefly proposing a practice approach in advancing this research.
