Abstract
This article shows that many writers in English used Christian themes and motifs in interpreting the events of the Great War. Themes such as service, suffering, sacrifice, self-sacrifice and redemption were often combined with late Victorian ideas of Christian manliness and the perversion of Biblical stories happens frequently. Writers throughout the Commonwealth found in Christian images and tropes a heritage they shared with millions of others and which they used to describe terrible events that still hold a dreadful fascination.
