Abstract
Emergency preparedness has come to the forefront of everyone's minds in the last decade with international events such as 911 in New York and 7/7 in London and the Avian and Swine flu pandemics. Each major incident has its own unique course of action and so preparing the healthcare community has become an expanding and increasingly complex area with pressures on government bodies to ensure cohesive local, national and international responses to varying threats. In the United Kingdom (UK), the Civil Contingencies Act (2004) lays out the responsibilities for all key stakeholders to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century and establishes a modern framework of legislative measures to ensure the effects of the most serious emergencies can be dealt with at a national level.
