Abstract
Anti-conversion campaigns and laws have been linked to the mainstreaming of Hindu nationalism in the Indian context since the 1990s. Taking account of the historical and legal genealogies of
anti-conversion, this essay makes the case for highlighting how the concern for sovereignty may shed light on how a politics of anti-conversion is able to thrive. The essay provides a broad survey of
academic literature which references these historical and legal genealogies of anti-conversion and demonstrates how a discussion of sovereignty may contribute to extant debates on the politics of
anti-conversion.
