Abstract
This thesis explores the experience building relationships and transitioning to independent living from the perspective of residential care workers and care leavers.
Chapter One is a systematic literature review of the experiences of care leavers transitioning from residential childcare to independent living. A systematic search identified sixteen papers that met the eligibility criteria and were analysed using Meta-ethnography. Subsequently, three reciprocal themes were found providing unique insight into the experiences of care leavers transitioning from residential care into independent living: they experienced social isolation and rejection when they left the home, faced socio-economic uncertainty and developed ways of coping and adaptation, involving individual and relational strategies. Clinical implications are considered including the roll out of extended care schemes and harnessing peer support.
Chapter Two is an empirical study exploring residential care workers experiences of building relationships with children who have had prior placement breakdowns. Interviews with fourteen residential care workers were analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. The analysis revealed three overall themes: “A job of many hats”; Striving to earn the children’s trust; and Making connections in and between teams. The findings highlighted the varied nature of the workers’ roles, strategies used to build the children’s trust and importance of communication and connection with their team and wider agencies. Clinical implications are considered including opportunity for trauma informed care training.
Chapter Three is a reflective account outlining the researcher’s inspiration for this topic, challenges that they faced during the research journey and consideration for their personal and professional development. The researcher outlines the importance of reflective practice and refers to psychological theory throughout.
