Abstract
This research thesis further contributes to the understanding of fathers’ experiences of traumatic births and explores trauma experienced by Black British Caribbean women during the perinatal period. This thesis is split across three chapters, each outlined below:
Chapter One
Chapter one is a systematic umbrella review of fathers’ experiences of traumatic births. The aim was to identify and synthesise reviews that described fathers’ experiences, allowing service provisions and future research aims to be known. Thematic synthesis revealed two main themes that highlighted the importance of quality and empathic relationships with health care professionals during traumatic births. The second theme considers the wider impact of trauma on fathers’ emotional wellbeing and relationships. Clinical implications and future research directions are outlined.
Chapter Two
Chapter two is a qualitative research study that explored Black British Caribbean women’s lived experiences of trauma during the perinatal period. The experiences of nine first-time mothers were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Emergent findings relate to the impact of discriminatory care compounding the challenges that mother and baby face during the perinatal period. It highlights the importance and use of support networks for Black women in navigating difficulties. Clinical and service implications are discussed alongside areas of future research.
Chapter Three
Chapter three is a personal reflective account of the process of conducting the research outlined in chapter two. The model Social GGRRAAACCEEESSS has been used to reflect on the intersection of identity and research.
