Abstract

As part of this special section dedicated to the Argentine writer Tomás Eloy Martínez (1934–2010), this article explores his journalism in the 1960s in the newsweekly magazine Primera Plana. The most influential magazine of the decade, Primera Plana formed Argentine political opinion and cultural tastes. Martínez was the premier cultural journalist of the magazine, developing a distinctive style of ‘new journalism’. The article analyses his key role in developing film and literary criticism in Argentina and Latin America, as well as his coverage of a range of contemporary issues, from the anniversary of Hiroshima to the Russian space race.
