Abstract

This chapter starts with a brief discussion of the term ‘intercultural’. After contrasting it with the term ‘cross-cultural’ and after considering the question raised many years ago by Blommaert (1991), ‘how much culture is there in intercultural communication?’, it proposes a working definition for the chapter. It then reviews discourse-based intercultural research that focuses on each of the following: misunderstandings, discrimination/exclusion, interpersonal relations, and creativity/personal growth. In exploring intercultural communication from each of these perspectives, it draws on empirical research from different contexts, such as business meetings, job interviews, service encounters, and university classrooms. Sample data is analysed, illustrating the role that culture can play in such interactions and the use of some helpful analytic frameworks. Conceptually, due attention is given to recent work that illustrates the positives that intercultural communication can bring, and that also explores the complex interconnections between discourse, context and norms.
