Abstract

We are happy to present the Proceedings of the 5th Biennial International Gender and Language Association Conference, IGALA5. The Conference was held at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand from 3 to 5 July 2008. The International Gender and Language Association (IGALA) developed from the Berkeley Women and Language Group, a graduate student group that organized several conferences in the 1980s and 1990s. IGALA was established in 1999 and is now an international interdisciplinary organization committed to the promotion and support of research on the interactions of language with both gender and sexuality. Previous Conferences have been held at Stanford (US), Cornell (US), Lancaster (UK), and Valencia (Spain).
