Abstract

The internationalization of higher education, and hence of the student experience, has two main foci: experiences ‘at home’ and experiences ‘abroad’. The former is known as ‘internationalization at home’ and traditionally has an emphasis on curriculum. The latter has a mobility focus and refers to the opportunity for students to spend time studying or working in another country, for varying periods of length. The mobility may occur via various structural systems, such as through an exchange program, a dual or joint degree program, or the student may arrange the sojourn him/herself, usually needing the approval of the ‘home’ university if the mobility experience forms a formal part of the degree.
