Abstract
Sociophonetics is often defined as the interface between sociolinguistics and phonetics. The rich research tradition and meta-literature of this interface has reached a new milestone with the publication of the Routledge handbook of sociophonetics. This introduction synthesizes the meta-literature of sociophonetics to describe the field’s unique position in linguistics and its contributions to linguistic knowledge. It advocates for a broad conceptualization of sociophonetics and sociophonetic data that ranges from “phonetic sociolinguistics” to “sociolinguistic phonetics,” with a core space of uniquely sociophonetic insights. It argues that sociophonetics has initiated a “fourth wave” of variationist sociolinguistics, which explores the intersections and mutually constructive relationships between social-indexical variation and human cognition. It suggests a conceptualization of applications of sociophonetics that recognizes both “sociophonetics applied” and “applied sociophonetics.” Finally, it proposes high- and low-tech innovations to expand the range and depth of sociophonetic inquiry.
